FROM DR. CASCIO - SCIENCE CURRICULUM COORDINATOR - We want to announce a new resource for students and parents of the Garden City School District. The links to numerous science programs, competitions and contests are available on the Science Department Home page. We invite the students and parents to browse the programs and choose the ones that spark their interest and curiosity. There is such a variety of programs that students of different ages, abilities and interests can find something that will excite them. Some programs are well -known and highly publicized, such as Siemens or Intel Science Talent Search competitions intended for students with serious commitment to science research. Others are open only to students when they are registered as part of a school team (such as Science Olympiads). But there are also many smaller contests that invite children to explore different areas of science and involve writing an essay, drawing a poster, creating a poem, taking a photograph or participating in a science bee. In many cases, the students can register and participate independently. If they need, they can ask for help of any of our science teachers as well as a parent or other mentor. Examples are The Science and Society Essay Contest, Neuroscience for Kids Poetry writing contest or the Long Island Brain Bee competition. These contests could be great motivators for students (and not only because of the prizes J). They allow them to explore the areas of science that match their interests, go beyond the classroom curriculum and let the kids to show off their special talents.

| Peer AIDS Education Program - The Peer AIDS Educators program, as a nationally recognized leadership program, is dedicated to spreading awareness and life saving information to America's youth. The number one threat challenging the future of our generation is the serious, fatal, and ironically preventable HIV/AIDS virus.
We, as young leaders in our community, have completed long term, in depth training at North Shore University Hospital. This makes us qualified and knowledgeable enough to properly execute our informative and life saving classroom presentations, peer education campaigns, and annual children's toy drive. We ask for nothing more than your support in our efforts to eliminate this deadly disease with the only cure we have, knowledge.
AIDS: Millions dead, Hundreds or Millions Infected, 0 cured!
